CPSC 314 Sept 2018 Class Policies
Discussion Group (Piazza)
We will use Piazza for announcements, and you should use it for your own questions and answers
about course material. Posting questions to Piazza is a better choice than sending email to the
instructor or TAs individually, since we're all three monitoring the group - plus, your classmates
may have a useful answers! You may choose whether to post questions and answers anonymously or using
your own name. If you are asking a question that involves your own code, then
post it as a private question so that your classmates cannot see it, only the instructors.
Grades
To pass the course, you must obtain a passing grade in (a) the assignments; and (b) the final exam.
Attendance
Attendance in all lectures and your registered lab section is expected.
You are responsible for all material presented there. We will make some material
for both the lectures and the labs available online. However, we do not
guarantee that some topics will not be missed in those notes.
Plagiarism
Do not submit the work of others as your own. Please see more on plagiarism here.
Late Assignments
You will have three grace days which are yours to use for the assignments during the term. Use these
as you wish to help manage your time, but use them wisely. You can use all three on one assigment,
or one day for each of three assignments. Grace days are counted as integers, i.e., if you are one
hour late, that counts as one grace day. Once your grace days are all used, late assignments will
receive a grade of zero. If illness causes you to go beyond the three grace days for assignments,
the policies for "missed work" will be applied. See the link for this on the course home page.
Missed Work
The short summary of the policy is:
(a) provide documentation of the illness (see the form), in which case (b) a scaled z-score "fill-in" grade may then be used.
Here is the detailed policy for missed work.
Dropping the course
Because of high demand for the course, the drop deadlines will be strictly enforced. No drop forms
will be signed by the instructor after the first drop deadline. This means that if you attempt to
drop the course after that date, you will not be given permission to drop and you will either have
to complete the course or receive an "F" for the course at the end of the term. This policy has been
adopted to encourage students to make a serious commitment to the course or to drop it early so that
other students waiting to get into the course can register for it.
